Alfa

Description

Alfa is an open-ended software for practicing phonology. Teachers create their own activities to suit each student’s level and skills. The software displays a list of words (created by the teacher) and the student has to read as many as he can in the specified time. Students’ are assessed and the teacher can access their result at a later stage.

Teachers use the “Teacher” menu and create content for each activity including letters, words, syllables, sentences and sounds. Then they use this content to create activities.

Students use the “Student” menu. With the teacher’s help they choose an activity and activity duration. The selected content for each activity (letters, words, syllables, sentences etc.) is displayed in the cells at the bottom of the screen. A random sound plays (there is an option for disabling the sound) and the student has to click on the appropriate cell or type the text he hears at the available space. Students get 10 points for each correct answer and lose 2 points for each wrong answer.  The student is given immediate feedback for each answer, including the correct answer, in case he made a mistake.

The software has several options for changing colours (background, banner, text) and activity duration.

Some examples of activities you can create:

1.       activities including all the letters of the alphabet

2.       activities including specific letters which usually confuse children

3.       activities with syllables/words for each new letter the children learn

4.       activities with syllables/words sounding the same but spelled differently

5.       activities according to each student’s difficulties

6.       activities for introducing new vocabulary (words will be shown in the cells and the sound will be the definitions)

7.       activities for synonyms/opposites
