PECS is a unique augmentative/alternative communication intervention package for individuals with autism spectrum disorder and related developmental disabilities. It begins by teaching an individual to give a picture of a desired item to a “communicative partner", who immediately honors the exchange as a request. The system goes on to teach discrimination of pictures and how to put them together in sentences.
PECS Sensory Packs include various toys which stimulate the senses (vision, hearing, touch).
The PECS – Audio Toy Pack includes a range of audio toys for students who love sounds and music, with extra 'feely' and visual reinforcement in most of the toys. The pack includes 10 toys, corresponding PECS pictures & sentence starters, loop fasteners and an A4 activity board.
Each toy in this toy pack makes a different sound to allow the students get the feeling of different sounds. The use of every toy is very simple and might differ from toy to toy. Some toys need a simple press to make a sound and others need small or big hand movements.
Students will get involved with communication activities, visual matching, matching objects with sounds and other activities that the teacher can introduce using those tools. Teachers should follow a step by step methodology with the child, as follows:
1. Students are having the chance to get a few minutes of experimental play with each object and the sound that makes.
2. Students learn to recognize and match each object with the corresponding picture.
3. Students needs to communicate which toy they want to play with by giving the corresponding picture to the communication partner, so he can give them the preferred toy.
4. Students need to build a phrase in the activity board to get the preferred toy, ex. “I want + picture of toy”.
