Description

“Flip-it: Visual Memory” is a card game for practicing visual memory. It consists of 54 cards, with pictures on both sides (front side has one picture and rear side has two or three pictures).  

A picture is shown in the front side of each card, which the student has to look for a specific duration. Then, the educator/ parent flips the card horizontally and the student now sees its rear side, which shows  two or three similar pictures, the one he had seen earlier and one or two more which differ in orientation/ objects position/ colors. The student has to observe the pictures and indicate the one he had seen before in the front of the card.

It is proved that this activity helps in developing visual memory and observation, provided that the parent/ educator/ specialist discusses with the student regarding how he is able to remember. It is very important every time the student selects an image, either it is the correct one, or not, to discuss about his choice so the student will have the chance to justify his answer. This way, the student learns to make correlations in order to remember things easily. It is very important the student to be able to justify his answer and tell why he remembers a specific element of the picture.

Example on how to discuss about the cards:

In the images below, you can see three card examples. The image shown on the left of each example is the front side of the card and the imaged shown on the right of each example is the rear side of the card. In Example 1 (footprint card) the student can justify his answer by saying that in the first picture the big toe was on his right, or the small toe was on his left. In Example 2 (balloons card) the child must remember not only the colors of the balloons, but also the order they appear. In Example 3 (children card), the child must remember who was in the left and who was in the right, who kicked the ball, what colors they are wearing etc.

If the child is not able to make such correlations on his own, then the parent/ educator will have to help him at first, by showing him how to observe the picture and focus on specific details or asking questions about the picture while the student is seeing the picture in the front side of the card. He can, for example, ask questions about the colors of the picture (which colors do you see, in which order they appear from left to right or top to bottom etc.), questions about the orientation of the picture (in which side does the object of the picture or one of its elements face, which of the objects in the picture is first, second etc.) or ask the child to describe the picture. Eventually, the child will learn to observe more details and be able to make those correlations on his own.
